[The fallen friend]

[1]

Opus 37

History

  • Choral work on a text by Jos De Haes from 1951.[2]
  • Before the work was given the definite title, it was called Een vriend [A friend]. It possibly had still another title before, but it couldn't be deciphered in the autograph.
  • In his own words, Legley was never happy with this work. [...] among others Vic Nees [has] done his utmost to give it the best possible performance, [...] but the result was still not brilliant.[3] It seems that Vic Nees, with a view to the recording in 1973 (see below), reworked Legley's composition in order to make it more suitable for choir.[4]
  • A performance of the work could not be traced. On 19 September 1973, the work was recorded by the BRT broadcasting choir, conducted by Vic Nees.[5]
  • On 26 March 1975, Legley withdrew the work.

Notes

  1. On the first page of the manuscript one can still read for, followed by a name that has been made illegible.
  2. DE SCHRIJVER, K.: Levende componisten uit Vlaanderen. Tweede deel. De jongere generatie van 1900 - ±1920, Leuven, 1955, p.138.
  3. VRT archives: Interview van Raymond Schroyens met Vic Legley, 11 June 1986. About the dating of this interview, see 2 Pieces for accordion.
  4. See the catalogue with recordings of Legley's works (Legley archive - Royal Conservatory Brussels), there one reads on p.4: een vriend | V.Legley | J.De Haes | enigszins bewerkt Vic Nees [a friend | V.Legley | J.De Haes | slightly revised Vic Nees]. The word somewhat was made illegible with tipp-ex.
  5. A document in the Legley archive of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (no shelf number yet). The recording itself has not yet been found.
  6. SATB+SATB.
  7. De Roeck (p.318) writes Wees.
  8. Not Legley's handwriting, possibly that of Vic Nees. See history.
