== History ==
*The music of this radio play<ref>CeBeDeM - lijst werken: ''WERKENLIJST VAN VICTOR LEGLEY opgemaakt de 20/10/64.'', p.1: ''cantate'' [cantata] (pencil note by Legley).</ref> on text of [https://nevb.be/wiki/De_Cneudt,_Richard Richard De Cneudt] has not been preserved.
*On 1 May 1942, Labour Day, this work was performed for the first time in the Maison du Peuple in Brussels (and also broadcast on ''Zender Brussel'') by the symphonic orchestra of ''Zender Brussel'' conducted by Paul Douliez and the radio choir conducted by Leo Van den Broeck; the texts were recited by Cel[ine] Colombie, J. Peeters and P. Dekelver.<ref>Anonymous: ''Radio-programma voor vrijdag'' in ''Het Nieuws van den Dag'' of 1 May 1942, p.3. Anonymous: ''Radio'' in ''Volk en Staat'' of 1 May 1942, p.2. BELGAPRESS: ''Het 1 Mei-feest der Unie en van het Rijksarbeidsambt'' in ''Het Nieuws van den Dag'' of 3 May 1942, p.4. Anonymous: ''De "een-meiviering" van de "Unie voor hand- en geestesarbeiders" in het teeken van het ware socialisme'' in ''Het Laatste Nieuws'' of May 3, 1941, p.8. Anonymous: ''Uit de hoofdstad'' in ''Gazet van Mechelen'' of 5 May 1942, p.3. Many thanks to Prof. Eric Derom, who in the [https://www.cegesoma.be The Study- and Documentation Centre for War and Contemporary Society] is doing research into musical life during WW II and informed us about the concert of 1 May 1942.</ref>
*The composition was announced in the press as ''1. Meispel'', but reviews of the concert systematically call it ''hoorspel [radio play] «De Arbeid»''.
*Although after World War II there was originally a plan to suspend Legley for a year from the N.I.R. because of his participation in the National Socialist celebration of 1 May 1942, he was spared as a ''promising artist''.<ref>RASE, Céline: ''«RADIO BRUXELLES AU PILORI» Des ondes impures à l'épuration des ondes. == Music ==
*instrumentation: choir and orchestra<ref>Deducted from the newspaper articles that discuss the work (see above) and confirmed by Anonymous: [http://www.historischekranten.be/issue/HYN/1943-11-26/edition/null/page/2 ''De Stad Ieper en hare Muziekakademie andermaal aan de eer''] in ''Het Ypersche'' of 26 November 1943.</ref>

=== Parts ===
*Arbeid [Labour]<ref>In the oeuvre list of [http://sabam.be SABAM], one can find several works by Legley on texts by De Cneudt, probably the parts of the radio play. We quote here the titles in alphabetical order.</ref>
*Fanfare
*Impression
*Song of the manual and intellectual workers
*Song of the Flemish factory workers
*Song of the Flemish intellectuals
*Song of the Flemish agricultural workers
*Song of the Flemish miners
*Song of the Flemish fishermen
*Song of the Flemish women
*Solo for clarinet

== Sources ==
*untraceable autograph/manuscript: '''Music Library of the former NIR'', shelf number ''EENSTEMMIG 3348''. This score (presumably a keyboard reduction) is no longer in the library (at present kept in the '''Royal Conservatory Brussels'''), possibly Legley made it disappear. In the library catalogue the work is called ''De arbeid, hoorspel door Richard De Cneudt'', it was catalogued on 27 September 1971.
