*This work was inspired by a painting by Maxime Van de Woestyne. Legley comments in his autograph: ''Le titre "Espaces" n'a pas de signification concrète sauf pour le peintre belge Maxime Van de Woestyne et moi. "Espaces" est le titre d'un tableau de Van de Woestyne. Ce titre, nous l'avons trouvé ensemble devant ce tableau, qui m'est précieux parce qu'il me permet de rêver. Il ne s'agit pourtant pas d'une musique descriptive. Disons tout au plus que j'ai été attiré par certaines idées, traduites par le peintre dans son oeuvre; je me fais l'illusion que certains passages de ma musique s'y reflètent.''
