It is not a wide, impressive stream, with raging waterfalls and roaring rapids. It does not run through mighty mountain landscapes or wild forests. It only flows pleasantly calmly in pleasantly calm surroundings. It knows the small joys and great sorrows of the simple people and animals who live along its banks. To walk along its banks is not to go out on an adventure; it is only to lie back and be irresistibly charmed by the peaceful calm of its golden water, which flows unhurriedly towards its rendezvous with the Scheldt.

You only have to become familiar with the strong smell of rotting flax, and then you cannot help but love it, our lovely golden river...
