History

  • Legley completed this composition on 10 March 1941 in Brussels.[2]
  • This string quartet was first heard on the radio on 25 February 1942.[3]
  • On 5 February 1943, the work was performed for the first time during a concert in the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels by the Carlo Van Neste Quartet.[4]

  1. Snarenkwartet is old-fashioned Dutch for strijkkwartet [string quartet], eerste means first.
  2. Legley's commentary on a note accompanying the autograph of the work: Hier steekt een beetje veel Hindemith in, maar ik durf er toch tevreden over zijn. [There's quite a bit of Hindemith in this, but I dare say I'm satisfied with it.]
  3. Anonymous: Radio - Woensdag, 25 februari in Het Vlaamsche Land of 25 February 1942, p.4. More details are not known. Presumably, the radio station was Radio Brussel.
