History

  • Radio play based on The Era of Harmony by Roger Richard. Gaston Derycke adapted the text.[2]
  • On 14 January 1949, the work was entered in the catalogue of the NIR under the shelf number SPELEN 149.
  • The play was broadcast in the evening of 25 January 1949 by the N.I.R./the B.R.N.O. Frans Roggen was responsible for the direction.[3][4]
  • The story was announced in the press thus:
[...] A new disease has broken out, which soon plagues the whole of mankind. In a very short time, almost every person will fall victim to a speechlessness against which medical science is powerless.
In all countries, the spoken language must finally be replaced by a musical language that is infinitely more varied and full of expression; at least that is what people think. But after three centuries of musical language, a young man in love suddenly finds speech again. [...][3]
  • The score of the work has been lost, but a recording of two parts exists (see sources), on the basis of which two parts could be reconstructed.

  1. ↑ An article in De Nieuwe Gids of 7 February 1948 (Anonymous: Eigen muziek. Victor Legley, p.8) calls this work Legley's wordend opus 30 [becoming opus 30]. Opus 30, however, is The golden river. Possibly this work is the missing opus 31.

Both newspaper articles mention Georgette de Rijcke as translator. In De Nieuwe Gids of 7 February 1948 (Anonymous: Eigen muziek. Victor Legley, p.8), Marcel Coole is erroneously mentioned as the author of the text. The journalist probably mixed up a few things in his article about Legley's activities in February 1948, as the composer was then also working on Het gevecht met het hart on lyrics by Coole.
