History

  • This song is a youthful work by Legley, of which only an incomplete autograph has been preserved.[1] It was composed in a late romantic idiom, probably in the 1930s.
  • The text comes from the Beatrice fragments of Prosper van Langendonck. Possibly the choice of text was influenced by Beatrix Souvage, whom Legley married in 1939.

Music

  • instrumentation: high voice and piano
  • text incipit: En eens... 't was avond ... 'k had zoolang gezworven [And once... it was evening... I had wandered so long][2]

Sources

  • autograph: Royal Conservatory Brussels (B-Bc), shelf number BV-03-4084. Incomplete autograph, four pages long.

Notes

  1. The autograph starts at -twijf'ling 't smeekend oog geheven.
  2. We assume that Legley only set to music the fourth of the Beatrice fragments.
